So those of you who have been following my Instagram account for a little while will know I love to decorate. Those of you who have followed my blog for a year may have seen this post about buying our new house in August 2016 when I was heavily pregnant. It was a hilarious nightmare, have a read! But a year on I’m so pleased we did it, and I have loved turning our magnolia painted house into a home. I really enjoy decorating and rearranging. Even when I was little I used to spend hours moving furniture around my bedroom to mix things up a bit. Since having Ozzy I spend a lot of time at home, so it was really important to me that it was somewhere I felt happy, cosy and relaxed. It’s also become a bit of a hobby – no it’s not as exciting as playing a sport or as productive as knitting, but I like it and it keeps me busy (as well as the baby climbing around, he keeps me busy too!) We obviously don’t have much money to play with because I’m not working, but it’s amazing what bargains you can get at Ikea. What I used to do was pick the room we would be working on next, because we were never going to be able to do it all as soon as we moved in. I had a huge ready to pop bump and we had spent all our money on buying the house and a second car, as well as all the unnecessary baby crap. When we had decided what room was top priority, I would have a look on Pinterest and Instagram (#interiors123 and #scandistyle anyone?), and get some ideas together. Once we (me, Tom doesn’t really care!) decided on the look we wanted for the room, we would get what we could at Ikea and source the rest online. I like to get one or two things from small sellers on Etsy because it makes it a bit more ‘ours’ if you know what I mean. For the Kitchen: we didn’t have much space to work with, but we wanted to add to the country/farmhouse kitchen vibe we had going on with the wooden cupboards and table. I love a good shelf, it’s easy to put up and you can rearrange the items on it to your heart's content. We got 4 of the same shelf (guess where from) for something like £8 each, popped them up above the table and filled them with a mixture of kitchen items which freed up space on the worktops, and decorative items. I still smile when I see them, and if I ever do get bored I can do a quick rearrange. Different items can go in the baskets, different flowers and plants can go up too. The prints are from Little House of Prints and say ‘drink coffee’ ‘&’ “be kind’. Quite a nice kitchen motto really. The first photo is our kitchen the day we moved in! Keep scrolling down to read about the bedroom and see before and after photos! For the Bedroom: Last room to be done because nobody sees it and we don’t spend much time awake in here, but now we have done it I’m so pleased. I even sit in here during Ozzy’s naps now to do my work, and we’ll sometimes watch a film or tv up here too now instead of downstairs. It started with those good old Magnolia walls fellow new build owners will know all too well, and a very beige armchair and bedframe. We’ve added in some white side tables from M&S when they had a furniture offer on. My little make up station consists of white MALM unit from Ikea and a little white collapsible chair, decorated with a throw and cushion to make it look a little less, well – plastic. I threw down a grey rug too to make it a little cosier (£10 from Ikea and it's gorgeous and fluffy). We have blue bedding and curtains, and some photos on the wall. Our newest addition though is the back wall which really ties the room together and I am so pleased with. We painted it a dark blue (Tom, Tom painted it while I watched and criticised) and ordered this lovely custom print from Wilderness Prints. We got a wooden frame and painted it yellow because apparently you can’t get a large yellow frame anywhere? I have never been so disappointed in Ikea. We put up a shelf (identical to the kitchen ones because we are boring and predictable, per what the print says) and I filled it with all the usual nik naks – spot the cactus light. Add in some fairy lights and lamps and it has instantly become the cosiest room in the house. The first photo below is the bedroom the day we moved in, and that night we just slept under a blanket right there on the floor even though I was 7 months pregnant, but it was the best night being in our new home. The second photo was a week after that, once we had shoved any old furniture in, and the last one is it newly decorated! :) There’s a post here about Ozzy’s nursery, and we are leaving the 3rd room undecorated with just a sofa bed in for now, as he will be taking that over after Christmas, he's just too big for his box room now, and I’m sure there will be a post about how we decorate it, I’m hoping for jungle, rainforest or under the sea themed. So, I would love to know your decorating process. Do you slowly do it room by room, or jump in and do it all at once? What’s your favourite room in your house? And most importantly, as this is September self care after all, what do you like to do in your spare time?
